Even though Southern Africa has been evangelized, large pockets of people groups still remain to be reached. The reasons are varied, ranging from resistance to the gospel to inaccessible locations. Kenya has the most least reached people groups (25) followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (11) and Tanzania (10). South Africa and Swaziland are the only two Southern African countries without least reached people groups.
Religion
Even though Southern Africa is mostly a "Christian" sub-continent, many people do not follow theologically sound doctrine; compromise can be found in virtually every culture.
- Christian : 73.7% (198.8 million)
- Evangelical Christian : 22.9 % (45.5 million of total Christian population)
- Animist : 15.1% (40.8 million)
- Muslim : 8.3% (22.4 million)
- Non Religions/Other : 2.3% (6.3 million)
- Hindu : 0.6% (1.5 million)
Politics
Civil war, military coups, Marxist regimes, dictatorships, and corruption have all been trademarks of some of the Southern African countries. Botswana is the only exception; the country has enjoyed political and economical stability since independence in 1966.
The world-wide collapse of Communism, the end of the Cold War, and international pressure have led to a dramatic swing towards democracy in these countries. However, many of the various new-found democracies are slowly returning to dictatorships. Renewed conflicts are furthering this process.
Economics
Some of the poorest countries in the world are in Southern Africa. The average annual per capita income on the sub-continent is $1 226; income ranges from $80 per person (Mozambique) to $5990 (Reunion). Average public debt per person is $530. Mozambique is the poorest country while South Africa is the richest.
Economic growth is hampered by years of civil war and internal strife, corruption, flirtation with Marxism and under-development of natural resources and infrastructure. There is a definite move to democracy, but it will take years to recover from mismanagement and civil war.
Geography
Southern Africa takes up 37.6% of Africa's total land area. This area is also rich in natural resources, cultures, and scenery. Some of the most spectacular scenery include the tropical rain forests of central Africa, the deserts of the south, grass plains, the Victoria waterfalls, the Indian Ocean Islands, and the various lakes (Nyassa, Turkana, Kariba).

History
For years Southern Africa was the playground of colonial powers. After the independence movement, many countries fell into intense power struggles.
- 1100's: Persian, Arab, and Indian slave traders establish slave trade posts on the East African coast.
- 1500's-1890: The colonial race starts. Britain and Portugal are the first to arrive; France, Belgium, and Germany are not far behind,
- 1960-1990: Independence.
- 1990's : Move towards democracy.
