A Vibrant Industry

The taxi industry in South Africa is a vibrant part of our everyday lives. Whether we travel in them or behind them, they impact us profoundly. There are over 80 000 operators operating 127 000 taxis over the country. They now transport 65 % of the population. That is around 26 million people. The taxi industry provides a unique opportunity to reach a captive audience with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How Does The Gospel Taxi Club Work?

Gospel Taxi Club is a ministry of World Mission Centre that mobilizes local churches to bring the gospel to taxi drivers and their passengers. It starts by World Mission Centre motivating a local church to select a Gospel Taxi Club team. The team is trained in how to reach out to taxis. World Mission Centre then provides the team with a special package. The team does all the preparation work to reach out at a taxi rank close to the church. There they then distribute the packages on a monthly basis while building relationship with the drivers.

What Does The Package Include?

Each package includes:

• A specially prepared audio tape that contains a relevant gospel message, Christian music and road safety tips.
• The driver is asked to regularly play the tape to his passengers.
• 10 postcards that each have a tear-off gospel tract. The passengers who need follow-up completes the card and send it to the outreach team who follows through up with a visit, literature or relevant ministry.
• A bumper sticker that goes on the back of the taxi. This is so that Christians who see it, will be reminded to pray for God's blessings on the driver, his ministry through the tape and the passengers.

History Of Gospel Taxi Club

Thge club has been operating for 12 years. During this time over 70 000 tapes were distributed to taxi drivers. Hundreds of local church members have been mobilized out of the pews into taxi ranks and other areas of missions. Hundreds of thousands of people were given the opportunity to hear the gospel.

What Is The Process And The Cost Per Church?

Select a team of not less than 3 people from your church and send them for one day's training in your city.

The team then visits the taxi. On each visit they hand out tapes, but on visit two and three they also follow up on the drivers who they contacted on previous visits. The cost is R25 per package.
